Everyone knows that a man needs a good adventure once in a while. An adventure that pumps the adrenaline, pushes our limits, and brings us back to our manly roots. We here at Smokey Mountain Snuff are bringing you the 10 most manly adventures in America, sure to set your heart pumping and your mind racing with possibilities. Sit back, pop in a Smokey Snuff lipper and let’s go to our first manly adventure: climbing Yosemite’s El Capitan.
El Capitan, also known as El Cap, towers over Yosemite National Park in California. A massive vertical rock formation two times the height of New York City’s Empire State Building, El Cap is not for the faint of heart. It is the largest single piece of granite in the world with two faces and a protruding shelf between them called The Nose. Routes up are given gentle names such as Lurking Fear, Every Man For Himself, and Kaos. On average, climbers will take 4-5 days to ascend while sleeping in slings hanging from the mammoth rock.
While you don’t have to be an expert climber to conquer this beast, you do have to be ready. Here are a couple skills to have under your belt before you take on our number 10 adventure.
1. Strength. Climbing a rock twice the height of the Empire State Building with 100lbs. or so on your back takes strength and stamina. You ain’t going to feel very manly bailing out on your buddies mid-climb because you’re too weak to go on. Start up a core fitness program and get in shape.
2. Climbing skills. Kind of goes without saying, but man, you are going to need climbing skills. Special skills will include crack and crimp work since this climb is a vertical face. Practice on smaller mountains around home or hire a ‘pro’ to teach you some skills.
3. Everyday skills. You’re going to be climbing and sleeping along a vertical face. It’s going to take you a good 5 days. Somewhere in that time frame, you are going to need to eat, drink, and let’s face it, drop the kids off at the pool. Get the skills to do all of these thousands of feet in the air, with minimum space and not letting anything drop. Have fun practicing.
4. Packing skills. Like we said above, you’re looking at a good 100lbs of gear, so choose wisely. You’ll need gear for sleeping, safety gear, food and drink, and of course several cans of Smokey Snuff. While surrounded by forests in the majestic Yosemite Park, our choice for this adventure is Wintergreen, a must have for this climbing adventure.
